Natik at Work

 

Natik supports grassroots partner organizations that focus on education and economic opportunity in Sololá, Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico. With Natik’s help, our Partner's are having an impact!  

 
Currently, Natik works with five Partner organizations in Chiapas, Mexico and Sololá, Guatemala that have cumulatively served 5,000 indigenous people since 2007. Natik believes in a world where even the most marginalized populations have the necessary tools to transform themselves and their communities from within.

The MSV cooperative is certified by the Fair Trade Federation, which means the artisans earn   fair wages for their creations. The artisans use traditional weaving and embroidery techniques to create home decor and garments. Natik provides financial and mentoring support.

Natik is a fiscal sponsor of ANADESA, a community center in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala with an artisan cooperative that prepares meals for international visitors. Additionally, the artisans create beaded jewelry and all-natural shampoo.

Natik is thrilled that several of our scholars graduated from high school and college in recent years. Most were the first in the families to complete schooling—it is a testament to their resilience and fortitude. With additional funding for study stipends, we are hoping to add more graduates to their numbers!

Books are rare in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. Learning to read or being read to is also rare. Natik supports the Puerta Abierta Traveling Library, which visits nine rural elementary schools. In addition to working with children, the library facilitates teen reading circles at four secondary schools and visits a senior center.

While the total amount in dollars seems small by U.S. standards, note that the annual income for rural women head of household could be less than $1,000 a year. Natik partnered with MSV to establish this artisan cooperative that has grown to 60 women creating home decor and garments using traditional Mayan techniques. Sold on  Etsy  and to select retailers, the cooperative is raising money to build a second floor above Yo'onik Community Learning Center to grow their capacity to take on commercial orders and increase the number of artisans.
